Beauty & the Bank: Sephora Sale

beautyandthebank_final

“Is it worth it?” In the wonderful world of skincare, this question is almost impossible to answer. Skin types and bank accounts vary from one to another and where one spends their pennies is a personal choice. The only answer we feel comfortable giving is where we’d spend our OWN pennies (or big bills in some cases) and therefore, Beauty & The Bank was born. Brand by brand, serum by serum, Beauty and the Bank provides product overviews and mini reviews of everything that’s graced our faces to date. Take a peek into what we’ve tried, what we’ve loved, and what you’d have to pay us to use.

First things first: to better understand our thoughts, you have to understand our skin:

VANESSA: 35 years old with oily/combo skin (to be honest, more like really oily t zone and slightly oily everywhere else), prone to redness and breakouts. Main concerns: fighting the signs of aging (especially lines around the mouth) and improving skin clarity. Vanessa lives in Minneapolis with frigid winter and glorious (but far too short) summers with low humidity. She spends 1/3 of her time on the beach in Florida in extreme heat and humidity. (Find her on Instagram at @goalstogetglowing).

LAURA: 34 years old with chronically dehydrated with fine lines, prone to pigmentation, previous acne sufferer. Main Concerns: hydration, fighting the signs of aging, and pigmentation. Laura lives in Toronto with frigid winters and humid summers. Laura will never be caught camping and is a fan of heating and air conditioning, and she is on an airplane weekly for work, furthering her dehydration. (Find her on Instagram at @lathertolashes).

IN TODAY’S SERIES:

Sephora Beauty Insider Appreciation Event

Did someone say sale? Sephora sale? Sign us up. The Sephora Beauty Insider Event doesn’t happen often, and a lot of the brands Sephora carries rarely go on sale (La Mer, SK-II, we’re looking at you) so it may be a good time to stock up your carts with backups or items you’ve been dying to try but waiting for a little discount. Each of us has come up with both an AM and PM routine full of Sephora goodies we love. No rating scale for this Beauty and the Bank series as all of these we would rate a 3 (I’d buy it if it were on sale (duh)) or more.

Below we cover:

  1. Sale dates and details
  2. Brands to focus on and which brands you can find at other online retailers for potentially less
  3. AM and PM routines with sale picks
  4. What products are currently in our shopping cart

Happy shopping, beauties.

This post is NOT sponsored. We just thought it would be fun to share some picks.

Sale Details and Tips

Dates: August 24th – September 3rd, with the first six days open to VIB Rouge Only. In an interesting turn of events, the emailed coupon is valid only ONCE online, but unlimited times in store.

Valid in both US and Canada:

  • Rouge Members: 20% off with code YESROUGE, valid 8/24 through 9/3
  • VIB Members: 15% off with code YESVIB, valid 8/30 through 9/3
  • Beauty Insiders: 10% off with code YESINSIDER, valid 8/30 through 9

Don’t forget to stack coupons by using Ebates to save more money. If you haven’t signed up before you can get $10 in your account after your first purchase of $25 or more for using this referral link: ebates.com/r/NESS119

We focus on items that are exclusive to Sephora because (especially for people that aren’t Rouge…like Vanessa), we can get bigger discounts  purchasing some brands from other retailers or from the brand’s own website. For example, Vanessa never buys Sunday Riley products during the Sephora sale  because Skinstore.com will often have 25-30% coupons that work on Sunday Riley. **Update 4/26/19: Skinstore hasn’t had as many 30% off coupons lately but I have still seen some 25% off. Also, some people have experienced some pretty bad customer service from Skinstore so that is something to keep in mind.**

To help make it easier to know which brands AREN’T at Macy’s, Ulta, Skinstore, and Dermstore (which often have coupon codes), below is a list of brands [as of Aug 2018] that would be a good idea to focus on for the sale because they are NOT at Macy’s, Ulta, Skinstore, or Dermstore.

V thoughts
I just talked about this in my Dermstore sale picks, but I will repeat my thoughts here. I am on the last drops of my original bottle (which lasted me about 18 months) and I CAN NOT be without this. This is the product that I depot into a little sample jar to always have with me when I travel (because I always get a blemish when I travel… such fun). It works best on cysts, works decent on small bumps (texture). The reason I love it is because I like to treat spots with a combo of BHA and AHA (which this has) BUT I also don’t want to overly dry out spots or leave my skin flakey. If I feel a major bump along my jawline forming I will put this on two to three times a day on the spot and it never makes it dry and it will either flatten the bump or make it come to the surface and leave much quicker. I am pretty sure this is supposed to be an all over face treatment since the bottle is so big, but I personally use it as a spot treatment (although I will put it all over my forehead when I have bad texture that forms there).

3. Hydrating Toner: Origins x Andrew Weil Mega Mushroom Relief & Resilience Soothing Treatment Lotion

  • Brand description: This light, refreshing treatment lotion, made with reishi mushroom and fermented chaga and coprinus mushrooms—hydrates and soothes for calm, healthy-looking skin. The formula is alcohol-free and pH-balanced.
  • Smell: Fresh and delightful (kind of reminds me of how it smells when you walk into an Aveda store)
  • Texture/application: Watery
  • Place used in my routine: Before serums
  • Size and Price: 6.7 oz for $34
  • Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, PEG-4, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil**, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil**, Pogostemon Cablin (Patchouli) Oil**, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil**, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil**, Boswellia Carterii (Olibanum) Oil***, Limonene, Linalool, Citronellol, Geraniol, Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi Mushroom) Extract, Fuscoporia Obliqua Sclerotium Extract, Cordyceps Sinensis (Mushroom) Extract, Ergothioneine, Camelina Sativa Seed Oil, Lactobacillus Ferment, Hippophae Rhamnoides Extract*, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract*, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract*, Ocimum Sanctum (Holy Basil) Leaf Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Silybum Marianum Fruit Extract, Saccharomyces Lysate Extract, Centella Asiatica (Hydrocotyl) Extract, Hypnea Musciformis (Algae) Extract, Caffeine, Sucrose*, Salvia Sclarea (Clary) Extract, Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Gellidiella Acerosa Extract, Trideceth-9, Glycerin, Glycereth-26, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Maltodextrin, Pentylene Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol.
V thoughts
This is SUCH a lovely product to use. It is so soothing and hydrating and it is also a favorite of my mom and husband… and basically anyone that tries it. I will also use this to mix in with dry masks in addition to just applying it directly on my face with hands or cotton pad.

4. Hydrating Serum: Algenist Liquid Collagen

  • Place used in my routine: Before moisturizer
  • Size and Price: 1 oz for $115
  • Ingredients: Collagen, Water (Aqua, Eau), Propanediol, Isononyl Isononanoate, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Betaine, Pentylene Glycol, Dextrin Palmitate, Collagen Amino Acids,Parachlorella Beijerinckii Exopolysaccharides, Chlorella Protothecoides Oil, Helichrysum Stoechas Extract, Cylindrotheca Fusiformis Extract, Niacinamide, Tocopherol, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Adenosine, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Palmitic Acid, Disodium EDTA, Carbomer, Sodium Lactate, Amodimethicone, Homosalate, Polysorbate 20, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Octocrylene, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum), Limonene, Beta-Carotene (CI 75130).
V thoughts
Despite the name, I don’t use this product thinking its main role is to boost collagen… it would be great if it did, but I don’t know of any scientific evidence that the collagen used in this product will penetrate the skin and increase collagen over time. Bottom line is that my skin looks so healthy and plump with I use this. I treat this like a special treat (given the price) and use it 2 to 3 days in a row before an event to guarantee glowing skin. This absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a weird residue. It has also never pilled on me.

5. Moisturizer: Tatcha Water Cream

  • Brand description: The Water Cream provides nutrient-rich, balanced hydration with the unique water-burst that breaks upon application to deliver nourishment without leaving skin sticky or greasy. It clarifies and refines skin with pure, powerful Japanese botanicals: Japanese wild rose visibly tightens pores and smooths skin texture; Japanese leopard lily helps control excess oil and purify skin by supporting natural skin turnover; and hadasei-3—an anti-aging trinity of green tea, rice, and algae—restores healthy-looking radiance. The formula imparts a subtle, shine-free glow with a touch of 23-karat gold.
  • Smell: Botanical light smell
  • Texture/application: Super lightweight cream that turns into a watery texture when you apply it on skin.
  • Place used in my routine: After serums
  • Size and Price: 1.7 oz for $68
  • Ingredients: Water, Saccharomyces/Camellia Sinensis Leaf/Cladosiphon Okamuranus/Rice Ferment Filtrate*, Dimethicone, Propanediol, Glycerin, Diglycerin, Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone, Gold, Belamcanda Chinensis Root Extract, Rosa Multiflora Fruit Extract, Houttuynia Cordata Extract, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Lecithin, Pistacia Lentiscus (Mastic) Gum, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Mica, Peg-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Dimethicone/Peg-10/15 Crosspolymer, Dimethicone/Phenyl Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Disodium Edta, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Parfum/Fragrance, Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol. *Hadasei-3.
V thoughts
This is light and refreshing and makes my skin immediately hydrated and bouncy. I love this in the summer in particular. The packaging is heavy and beauty and it feels luxurious. Do I need to use an expensive moisturizer? No. But sometimes you just need to treat yourself.

Great mineral-based SPF that also includes vitamin e and 3 forms of Vit C. It doesn’t make me greasy and works well under makeup. Doesn’t leave a bad white cast either.

L thoughts
I really love this as a morning cleanser, more than I liked the Brightening version which a) I found drying after a while and b) it randomly started foaming halfway through the bottle. This one feels like it would strip the skin to an extent, but it doesn’t. My skin feels balanced and calm after rinsing

2. Tone: Origins x Andrew Weil Mega-Mushroom Relief & Resilience Soothing Treatment Lotion

L thoughts
This is a staple in both my morning and evening routines. It calms, hydrates, and relieves redness, perfectly prepping skin for serums. I also love mixing this with a mask or using post exfoliating to soothe any irritation

3. Serum: Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum

  • Brand description: B-Hydra™ is a cool glass of water for your thirsty skin. This is a great hydrating serum for dehydrated skins as it doesn’t immediately sink in leaving my cheeks tight. I feel hydrated and protected when I use this and it aids in smoothing the skin which is great for makeup application.

L thoughts
This is a savior for my dehydrated skin. I find throughout the day my skin can “eat” my makeup and my pores become more visible – this goes a long way in preventing the makeup meltdown. I feel it strengthens my barrier and prevents moisture loss throughout the day while still feeling lightweight on the skin. Plays well with SPF and makeup, too.

5. SPF: La Mer The Broad Spectrum SPF 50 UV Protecting Fluid

  • Brand description: A powerful, lightweight fluid that provides daily protection against damaging UV light and keeps skin comfortable, hydrated, and soothed. This weightless, quick-absorbing veil of protection helps prevent the appearance of visible discolorations and is a vital last step in every daily regimen. Miracle Broth™ helps boost skin’s natural powers of renewal, while a blend of photonic spheres, gemstones, and smart seaweed that react to light help create a comforting emollient barrier.
  • Smell: Floral, but not grandmother offensive floral. Dissipates quickly
  • Texture/application: Lotion, bordering on cream. Spreads easily and absorbs nicely.
  • Place used in my routine: Final AM step
  • Size and Price: 1.7 oz for $90
  • Ingredients: Avobenzone 3.00%, Homosalate 5.00%, Octisalate 5.00%, Octocrylene 2.70%, Oxybenzone 3.00%, Water, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Methyl Trimethicone, Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate, Aleurites Moluccana (Kukui) Seed Oil, Lauryl Peg-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Peg-100 Stearate, Butylene Glycol, Glyceryl Stearate, Dipentaerythrityl Tri-Polyhydroxystearate, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Algae (Seaweed) Extract, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa) Seed Powder, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seedcake, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Seed Meal, Eucalyptus Globulus (Eucalyptus) Leaf Oil, Sodium Gluconate, Copper Gluconate, Calcium Gluconate, Magnesium Gluconate, Zinc Gluconate, Tocopheryl Succinate, Niacin, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Powder, Laminaria Ochroleuca Extract, Malachite, Caffeine, Sorbitol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Vp/Eicosene Copolymer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Saccharide Isomerate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Caprylyl Glycol, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer, Dehydroxanthan Gum, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Citric Acid, Tourmaline, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Silica, Peg-8 Laurate, Fragrance, Disodium Edta, Phenoxyethanol, Limonene, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Linalool, Citronellol, Mica, Green 5 (Ci 61570), Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891)
L thoughts
That price tag hurts, right? Sadly, I love this and so does my skin. It leaves the nicest non-matte, not too dewy finish that stays comfortable throughout the day. I can get away with using this as my moisturizer on some days and makeup stays fresh throughout the day.

V thoughts
It is super silky and easily destroys makeup without vigorous rubbing. I slowly massage this on dry skin and my makeup melts away with ease. It doesn’t sting my eyes, it has a lovely scent, and wen you add water it turns milky and emulsifies.

This is an expensive product… but I really love using it. I was sent this in a PR package from Tatcha and I plan to repurchase it when mine is gone. The packaging is gorgeous and makes you feel special when you use it. But more importantly, this plumps up my skin, gives it lots of hydration, and makes my skin so soft when I consistently use it.

I was sent this as a PR sample and I have really enjoyed using it. I did a split face using this compared to Sunday Riley Good Genes and this was not as good at plumping up the skin as my favorite Good Genes! And since it is much cheaper AND doesn’t have a smell that my husband can’t stand to be around… this may end up being my GG replacement! [UPDATE 4/26/19: It will not be my GG replacement. It does cause some irritation if I use other acids during the week. During the time I was using this originally I had cut out almost all acids, so it is great if you don’t have other AHAs in your collection. But it was too irritating for me if I happened to  have used an acid toner a couple times during the week.] It tingles when you apply (similar to how GG feels for me) and absorbs easily. I didn’t see overnight results. But I spaced out its use (so as to not over exfoliate) and after my third use I started to become impressed.

Anytime anyone asks me for a moisturizer recommendation, this is what I suggest. I have oily/combo skin and so I first tried the Belif Aqua bomb and just wasn’t impressed. I felt like my skin still felt dehydrated. I heard Stephanie Nicole rave about this a couple years ago so I picked this up and I have never looked back. It is so hydrating but it is still light. But it isn’t so light that you feel like you put nothing on. It is rich but not greasy. Mixing this with an oil is a favorite way to use this to wake up with amazingly soft skin. I use this in the day time in the winter, and at night year round.

This is the definition of “no muss no fuss”. It effectively removes even waterproof mascara and all foundation, emulsifies nicely and rinses clean. I follow up with another cleanser after this because it can feel a bit waxy on my skin, but for first cleanse makeup removal, its amazing

One of my all time favorite masks (Note from Vanessa: This is also one my all-time favorite masks too!), this visibly reduces redness and calms skin, making it lovely post acid exfoliating or as a shower mask. I’ve mixed this with hydrating serums and clay masks alike with fantastic results.

This is a fantastic night cream for dehydrated skins looking to keep all the goodness from serums in, and stop moisture loss throughout the night. A little goes a long way, it provides a protective barrier on the skin that is hydrating, comforting, and soothing

Since we own all of the items we recommended, we wanted to close by showing you what is currently in our cart!

Vanessa’s Cart

I have been using samples of the Soleil Blanc for a year (I will go into Nordstrom for a sample every couple of months because the price keeps making me question whether I love it). After much deliberation, I have decided I am in love and it is time to finally buy it!

I ALWAYS get a new pack of the Shiseido facial cottons because I ADORE them. I will probably end up getting two packs and maybe one for my mom because I got her hooked on them as well.

I have a full size of Dim in the Ambient Lighting Powder but I want a small size of Diffused just for under my eyes.

I have wanted the Tom Ford eyeshadow for so so long. I have finally used up a couple other cream eye shadows so I am finally giving into temptation.

(Keep in mind, she is in Canada, hence the prices)

Two days ago there would have been four items, yet when it was time for serious buying two of the items were out of stock: a repurchase of La Mer’s SPF 50, and the Hourglass Illume Sheer Trio. So what’s ready to be purchased?
Two new to me makeup items from Nudestix: the Soft and Smokey set and the Nudies All Over Face Colour in Naughty n’ Spice. Vanessa got me hooked on cream cheek colour with the Tom Ford stick (probably my number 1 makeup recommendation in the makeup department) and I want to try more. The Nudies one looks promising and the added brush is a bonus.
