Thanks for the informative article! I’m really interested in the CurrentBody devices, but the affiliate codes no longer work. Is there any way that CB will update them for you?

Hi! So appreciate the informative article and comparison Living in the EU and trying to have one of your affiliate codes work. I just tried the goalstogetglowing25 at the Light Salon for the face and neck icons, and it said the code is not valid. I’d love to get a good face and neck combo somewhere! If there are any codes that work in Europe, please let us know!

Thank you for this incredibly helpful and well-researched blog post, Vanessa! One LED mask that you have not reviewed, but which seems really interesting, is the San Lueur mask (https://sanlueur.com/). It was launched very recently (late 2022 or first half of 2023?) in Australia, but I think it is available worldwide. The pros are pretty compelling, by the standards you’ve outlined in your article/blogpost: (a) the wavelengths are the evidence-based 415nm, 633nm, and 830nm—no more and no less; and (b) probably most importantly, according to my correspondence with a company representative, the irradiance is 50 mW/cm2 for the 633nm (red) *plus* 60 mW/cm2 for 830nm (NIR). Apparently, that makes this officially the most powerful consumer LED mask that is still safe for at-home use, since other models that list similar irradiance figures (i.e., in the 50s or higher) generally do so by adding the much lower irradiance of multiple wavelengths of light together into a combined irradiance (e.g., Dr. Dennis Gross, HigherDose). (Note that I only asked about red and NIR light, since I’m not interested in blue light.) In addition, (c) it is a soft silicone-style mask and has two straps (for the top/crown of the head and the back of the head), which I assume will promote adjustability for a comfortable and consistent fit. (d) In terms of customer service, the company rep with whom I corresponded was very gracious and helpfully detailed in responding to all my questions. (Thank you, Diana!!) Finally (e) it should take about a week to ship via DHL from Australia to the US. I haven’t bought the item yet, and have only seen it online, but I’m seriously considering buying it, based on the above-listed factors. The three things that give me pause, however, are: (a) it is pricey (US$491 plus US$24 to ship to the US) with no discount codes, as far as I can tell; (b) the manufacturer’s warranty is only one year; and (c) there are very few reviews or before/after photos currently available online. I will likely purchase it anyway and hope for the best.

Hi! Thank you for all your research! I’ve been getting ads for what looks like a new LED mask provider. They compare themselves to Omnilux, but the website is a little sparse. For the wavelengths, everything is comparable but they use a ~ before the lengths. Red flag? Would love to know if you’ve looked into them at all! http://www.luyors.com

one thing that annoyed me the second i went on their page was their chart showing all the extra benefits that blue and yellow light will give you. There For yellow, it definitely does not have supporting evidence that it will do all the things the company claims. For blue, the only benefit is targeting a specific bacteria that impact acne HOWEVER, that is only the 415nm and the company uses 460nm (also, fwiw they didn’t put a check mark next to combats acne under red light and they should have. There are actual peer reviewed studies to support that). Assuming there is a setting that lets you just use the red and NIR wavelengths, then I guess this wouldn’t be an awful option (they do provide their irradiance info in the FAQs and it is good) but the company clearly just makes claims willy nilly which is misleading and annoying 😉

I did end up buying the mask from Luyors and received it in early June. At the time it was bundled with a microcurrent device as well, and at a really good price. I think it’s a bit higher now. I really like that the mask comes with the neck/dec attachment, which is so expensive with other masks. You can use any light combined with NIR (or just by itself) so I use red and NIR. It works on a 10-minute timer, or you can choose to use longer, and it has three levels of strength. I’m happy that I bought it and I’m already seeing improvements in my skin. The extra strap for the top that you show would be help with comfort on the nose bridge, but it’s ok. Also the neck/dec velcro attachment should be stronger. I like that you don’t have to use NIR if you find that you are pigmenting from its use (unlike Omnilux, CurrentBody etc.).

Thank you so much for posting this! I ended up getting the Omnilux and it did make my melasma/pigment worse. Would have been nice to have the option to not use the NIR.

That is very odd — I wonder if it was correlation and not causation. Also, I’m confused why you think that NIR is the culprit. Based on the current research, NIR (at 940nm) reduced melasma. And other studies have found skin lightening/brightening using 633nm Red LED light, and to a lesser degree 830nm LED. The only wavelength know to increase pigmentation is Blue light. That being said, if you use a device with too high an irradiance (like 50 mw/cm2) OR you use a device like Omnilux but you do too many 10 min sessions back to back, you could cause heat/warmth to the skin. And heating in conjunction with the NO and ROS from Red/NIR could be a trigger for some forms of melasma.

Great post! How would you rate the SunHome Saunas Radiant Face mask with a 5 year warranty? Specs they provided are below and I’m waiting for the irradiance info:

58 four-chip LEDs for amber light (605nm), red light (630 nm), deep red light (66nm), infrared light (850nm)
    8 double-chip LEDs: red light (630nm), infrared light (850nm)
    62 double-chip LEDs: blue light (460nm)

Assuming you could NOT use the blue light (because I would personally avoid using 460nm as it might cause some hyperpigmentation AND it isn’t the wavelength found to actually target P. acne bacteria). So assuming you can just use the red/amber/NIR setting, I would give the same criticism that I gave to the DDG mask that uses those wavelengths. I just think you will get better results with a device that prioritizes the wavelengths of 633 and 830nm. Now, that being said, a 5 year warranty is great (assuming the process is easy and they don’t have alot of stipulations for what counts as being under warranty). If you do think this mask has benefits over other masks with an even mix of just the two ideal wavelengths I would definitely wait to see if they will actually provide the irradiance.

Glad to find this article, as i have an acne prone skin and my age in the middle of 30s. Time to invest something “anti aging”.
i thought blue light can help to control my acne. but as u said 460nm not really effective for acne.
i almost buy qure which is seems more light they have. but they also got 880nm (too much)

so do you think that omnilux contour still great for acne prone skin?
(hope that dont have to buy omnilux clear too) 🙂

    thx

Really not liking the direction CurrentBody is going in. It looks like they lifted the punch bowl and chugged all of the the capitalism flavor aid. Now they have all of these niche LED devices that only target one area, like a lip light that device, a hand light device, it’s excessive.

Then when you go to their UK site, it gets even worse. They’ve gone down the multi colors route and are selling a 700+ EURO silicone mask (FAQ) with all of these unstudied wavelengths such as green, yellow, and purple. Oh and this new “FAQ” line also has virtually no nose coverage. And why the hell do they keep referring to red light as 420nm?

Have you checked out “San Lueur” mask? Apparently, they claim they have 50mW/cm2 “maximum output” – this looks like a newer product, but not sure if I should go with Omnilux which seems to be a safe bet 😛 I am looking for an led mask to go along with my biweekly microneedling routine.

According to Omnilux, the Contour and Men masks have an irradiance of 35 while the Clear mask has an irradiance of 44 (see https://omniluxled.com/pages/help-center-products ). Are they overexaggerating?

    Hi there.

I’m so so grateful for your scientific analysis of the options as it’s a bit overwhelming deciding on which product by given the huge range of price points. I have tried the Deesse. However, I find it uncomfortable and not quite big enough for my large head ha ha. Further, I would like to treat my neck and décolletage at the same time. This means there are much fewer options. One is the Dermalux, which you have already reviewed (thank you :)). I would be really grateful if you could give your views on this one please?: https://cellumauk.co.uk/pages/at-home-led-light-therapy-machine
This potentially offers compromise between the expense of the Dermalux and a face-specific mask. Many thanks for your help, Joanna

Here is one more face mask I found, it’s from a company that makes other anti-aging devices. It has some Innovative features like built-in eye protection and instead of using straps, it seems to sit on your head like glasses, with arms. Strange, but sounds quite practical!

Crazy part is it claims 77mW/cm² yet it only has 60 lights.

Such an amazing informative article!! Thank you so much. I’m really interested in getting the No7 mask but it’s out of stock at Boots right now (I’m in the UK). What do you think of the OLIVIEREWILSON Professional Red Light Therapy Mask? It says “18 joules/cm2 in a 10 minute treatment, which equates to 30 milliwatts/cm2 of Near-Infrared 830nm and Red 633nm”. The mask looks a bit oddly shaped though (just the nose bit)… Looks pretty good, though! Or does anyone know of a cheaper red light and NIR therapy mask I can get in the UK?
